Why Czech?
Czech is a West Slavic language spoken by roughly 12 million people around the world, of whom 10 million live in the Czech Republic itself. The country has a proud history, stretching back beyond the foundation of Charles University in 1348 (one of the oldest in Europe) to recent times when the territory bestowed upon the rest of the world a motley assortment of contributions to global civilization: the Czechs gave us refined sugar, contact lenses, and a great literary tradition including Franz Kafka and Jaroslav Hašek, author of ‘The Good Soldier Švejk’.
Like many Slavic languages, Czech can be a challenge to learn, in part because of its complex case system, but also in terms of the language’s sounds. For instance, the famous Czech ‘ř’, as seen in the name of the famous composer Antonín Dvořák, is unique to Czech, pronounced rather like ‘rzh’. Moreover, many words in Czech can be constructed just as sequences of consonants, without any vowels.
