Vietnamese is an Austroasiatic language spoken by upwards of 80 million people. The majority of its speakers reside in Vietnam, but there are many Vietnamese communities spread throughout the border regions of neighbouring countries, as well as an enormous diaspora community spread throughout the Western world.
Vietnamese has close geographical links with China, and until relatively recently their language was written with a modified Chinese character script. However, European missionaries developed a version of the Roman alphabet to cope with the Vietnamese language, which is why their writing looks so familiar in form today. Not so in content though. Vietnamese can be an extremely complex language to learn, as it has even more tones than Mandarin Chinese; six tones in the North, where Hanoi is the standard, and five in the south, where Saigon is the main industrial centre.
